"I'm Marek Doyle and, in my capacity as Fitness Director of Blueprint Fitness, I operate as a Personal Trainer, Nutritionist and <Allergy Therapist in West London and around Basingstoke, backed by qualifications from NABBA, BCMA and BIAET.
I have spent years extensively reading and educating myself to reach my current level of understanding. Imparting this knowledge into my clients is essential, as it leaves them in no doubt as to the constant influence that nutrition has over our lives and how important it is to get this right in conjunction with a suitable gym program. It is an approach that pays handsome dividends.
I feel that I have earnt my place in the upper tiers of the profession, not just through applying effort to develop my knowledge but also through employing sufficient skepticism to seperate genuine research from clever marketing (this line is very thin, especially when you consider who pays for the publication of most science journals). Most doctors try to provide effective care, but are limited by what they know (the establishment only pays for pro-industry, pro-drugs research), what they are taught (the establishment teaches doctors to treat symptoms, not deal with the cause), what they are allowed to do (the establishment controls access to the professional registers) and what they are insured to do (the establishment also controls what their PI insurance will cover).
Everyone agrees that it is vital to have an extensive knowledge beyond that currently seen in both the medical and fitness industries. I think that having the wisdom to use this knowledge in an effective way is under-rated. Currently, we have thousands of specialist doctors who know more and more about less and less, and plus your average nutritionist, who knows the scientific basis of the food pyramid inside out but cannot relate this to the requirements of real humans. A doctor is happy to label conditions and offer prescriptions, but cannot offer any advice on burning fat. Your typical clinical nutritionist can talk all day about the properties of a number of phytonutrients, but ask how to lose weight effectively and you will be met with either a dismissive attitude or blind panic.
I feel it is extremely important to have a more extensive knowledge beyond the scope of the mainstream industry. This means understanding health and fitness issues at more than just a textbook level - at a level that provides balanced answers to all of the questions clients ask with a deep but translatable understanding of physiology, nutrition, the digestive system and every other relevant matter. However, whilst constantly called into use when appropriate, this advanced knowledge is not the main reason I get such reknowned results; its mainly just getting the basics right.
I have competed in Muay Thai kickboxing at Super Middleweight, recording victories in the ring. This means that when I talk about hard training, I know what I am talking about. However, these achievements would have beeen impossible without the guidance of my trainer, Cruiserweight world champion Andre MacIntyre, whose passion and experience are at the heart of these wins.
In the past, I was Basingstoke swimming champion in successive years and played football to a high level, being involved in Swindon Town's youth set-up for several years. I also had a year out of physical activity in my late teens, when I became distracted in setting up my finance company. Reconditioning myself allowed me to fully question the training methods I had previously taken for granted. Reading and research followed and, before I knew it, a career in health and fitness beckoned.
However, whilst formalising my qualifications, I was introduced to the low standards within the fitness industry on my first course. Regulation through REPs has created a dumbed-down qualification system which floods gyms with weekend-course personal trainers, those who know nothing beyond what their substandard textbooks tell them - I have met some who even cannot boil an egg (no joke); these guys are only at the gym to count your reps. There normally a proficient personal trainer or two in every region, and it's worth the effort to find them.
I write regular articles for a number of industry publications (AFN, Fitsense, PTN) and I am a contributing editor to Good Life magazine. I have amassed experience advising a host of different clients, including top models, TV celebrities and world champion athletes. However, most of my clients are regular members of the public, with normal aims varying from losing unwanted weight or adding muscle and strength to preparing for a marathon or even a new job. The beauty of an intelligent and balanced approach is that it can be applied to help anyone regardless of their situation.
I offer an approach that is holistic and well-planned, combining science with common sense. My personal experience in health, fitness and sport allows me to offer something that is practical, enjoyable and effective. If you would like to hire me as your personal trainer, nutritionist or allergy therapist, give me a call on 07833 715010."
